Habitat/Pollutant Impact Records
APIS provides pollution impact records for a variety of habitats, ecosystems and species. Each record contains information on key impacts including any critical loads or levels and a full reference list.
The search tools have been split into 3 groupings:
- Search by habitat - provides records for the 'APIS habitats' for the main pollutants of concern namely: nitrogen and acid depostion, ammonia (NH3), ozone (O3), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).
- Search by ecosystem - provides records for the 'APIS ecosystems' for the other pollutants of concern namely: halogens including fluorides, heavy metals, VOCs, dusts, and POPs
- Search by species - provides records of selected species for the main pollutants of concern
To help you with choose and match a habitat or ecosystem of interest please refer to the habitat table which relate the habitats and ecosystems used in APIS to UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) habitats (broad and priority), the Habitats Directive (Annex 1 habitats occurring in the UK) and EUNIS classifications. classifications.
Select a 'Pollutant' or a 'Habitat' to view records for your combination. Then click on the appropriate record link to view the full record. Note: not all habitats have a corresponding pollutant record.
Ozone and Nitrogen oxide records can now be found under 'Search by Ecosystem' tab.
Select a 'Pollutant' or a 'Ecosystem' to view records for your combination. Then click on the appropriate record link to view the full record. Note: not all ecosystems have a corresponding pollutant record.
APIS provides information on potential impacts of air pollutants on species based on considering impacts on the habitat supporting the species. You can use the look up tool below to select a species and find out about the relevant critical loads for the supporting habitats and whether the species is sensitive to the pollutant via impacts on the supporting habitat.
APIS does not contain full records for the impacts of air pollutants on species as, for example, it does for habitats (link) and therefore, does not include a literature review of studies on species' response to air pollutants.
You can search for species records below. Species within the database are those that are protected as part of a designated site. The results page gives impacts for key atmospheric pollutants.
